getting up at 6 am to catch a flight is truly a mission especially as a musician. so i wake up get my sh. together blind and half comatose i get my ass to the barcelona airport. check in without a problem USING MY ID CARD.i land in zurich. pass another two security checks and board the flight to istanbul. while on the plane it occurs to me that i don t have my fuckin passport with me and being that turkey is only potential e.u. member i think i have a serious problem.

at the istanbul airport. not a single customs agent speaks a word of english. uniformed dudes start barking at me in turkish. and finally i m told by a higher ranking officer that i will not be allowed entry and will be sent back to zurich on the next plane. now the show with jahcoozi is one day away so i m thinking that there is still hope for an rqm.

i want to talk to someone from the polish embassy – NO!!! can i use the phone? NO!!! i m left in the custody of some rookie cops that kick shit crack jokes and play mini football with paper cips. do you speak english?

YES I SPEAK ENGLISH.one of them barks back..ok.so i slap the dude up with a vomit of words..some pseudo legal talk..something about the airport being an international space..which i assumed it was from seeing a preview of that film with tom hanks where he s an immigrant stuck at an airport for a year or so…i can see he doesn t have a clue of what the fuck i m talkin about..at this point the higher ranking officer comes back and i am taken to a small interrogation room where i am searched and an inventory of all my belongings is made..my wallet is opened and the money counted. and then i am told to follow yet another officer to an adjoining room..red lights go on – shit i think it s time for THE RUBBER GLOVE.now i think i shouldn t have opened my mouth…this is revenge!!!

the door opens. and i m faced with the a dozen or so resigned faces of pakistanis nigerians south africans iraqis sri lankans afghans .. i learn about the nationalities much later of course because the police and the security only calls us by our country name..POLAND NIGERIA COME OVER HERE!! FOOD!! i will hear this several times before i am finally escorted to the plane back to zurich. the barking becomes normal as does the throwing of the burger king bags on the table every time we are given food.

the room reeks of sweat nicotine and burger king. the walls are yellow which clearly wasn t the choice color. the lighting is florescent and heavy and remains on 24 hours. there is no ventilation system and there are no windows whatsoever. the tv runs local programs fnon stop at quite a significant volume and later i learn that it cannot be adjusted or turned off.

reality check. the first brother i talk to is a positive young nigerian cat. he was stopped for having a fake visa. he was taken to the precinct and beat down by cops for throwing up his guard when they were trying to rough him up a bit. he spent 6 days in this same room eating nothing but burger king and drinking coke. when he will arrive in nigeria he might end up beaten by local cops and taken to jail essentially for protecting himself from a beat down by turkish cops. all his money was confiscated by turkish police but with no appropriate documentation.

later more nigerians are escorted into this room. some had fake passports some will get deported just on principle or simply because they are black and from nigeria – their visas and documents are legitimate!!! one of these cats spent all of his life savings to get out of nigeria and every time we talk tears well up in his eyes and all he can say is: it s hard it s hard it s hard…

a brother from guinea bissau who barely speaks english spends the rest of the night planning how he will escape his country again through the desert knowingly risking his life.

an engineer from iraq is in custody for having the wrong connection flight. immigration officers tell him that to enter istanbul he has to fly from bagdad and not from teheran. he will be held for 3 days and will make this trip again – this time from bagdad. he is on a business trip. we talk about the situation in iraq. it s good now he says. but for american troops to withdraw any time soon regardless of what the american presidential candidates might be saying it s simply impossible. i also learn that the american army has been giving away passports and american citizenships in south america and mexico in exchange for active duty in iraq. and it so happens that these recruits are now notorious for regularly killing innocent bystanders.

the sri lankan brother a father of 3 has been put on a plane 6 times already to his final destination and ended up back in istanbul every time. his wife is next door in the women’s detention room. he will spend another 3 days here before his case is reviewed by the consulate.

the pakistani youths are all students. it s their first time out of the country. they were deported from the ukraine where their visas were called into question. they describe the ukraine as an extremely poor country which they would never want to visit again. their visas were acquired through a legitimate agency. i get interrogated by them about my sex life. it turns out that all of them are still virgins. their next trip will be to katmandu where life is cheap and prostitutes affordable.

all of us witness a violent breakdown of another pakistani cat who was separated from his wife his mother and children. it takes some time for all of us to calm him down and explain to him that banging on the door will not change much.

it s crazy to see the faces of the new arrivals coming into the room and seeing us. i realized i looked just like them: confused scared in shock.

-god is breath

it wasn t easy falling asleep with the tv on full blast and the heavy florescent lighting. but it is possible. around 2 pm i was escorted out of the cell offered a kebab by an elderly gentleman who was the highest ranking official at the airport and finally taken to the plane. the swiss air representative was surprised that i had boarded both flights without a passport and ironically enough before boarding the flight from zurich to barcelona everyone s passports were checked to confirm that they are sufficient for taking this flight. a cold beer never tasted so good and i don t even like heineken. when we landed in barcelona i heard something that could ve been my last name through the airplane intercom. then we were told that we cannot get out of the plane for a while and finally that the passport control will be done on board. it turned out that the local police and customs got a message from istanbul that there is a criminal on the plane and needs to be intercepted by security on arrival…guess what? yep

never in my life have i felt so privileged as a citizen of poland. we need this world to change!!!
