The seaside holiday spot where locals have highest average life expectancy in UK

The team at Now Patient found the top 10 places in the UK with the highest average life expectancy.

In top place is the Orkney Islands, an archipelago in Scotland, which has an average life expectancy of 74 years of age.

Utilising data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the team placed Wokingham in second place with an average life expectancy of 71.

Following on from the Orkney Islands and Wokingham are Rutland with an average life expectancy of 70.7 and Windsor and Maidenhead with an average life expectancy of 70.0.

Now Patient listed four factors that can contribute to a long and healthy life – no matter where you live.

The first is to be a non-smoker, as the unhealthy habit is associated with numerous diseases, including cancer.

Now Patient noted: “It can help to identify the things which trigger your habit so that you can work to replace cigarettes with a healthier alternative.”

The NHS offers a free Stop Smoking Service, which may be at your local GP surgery, pharmacy, or even a mobile bus clinic.

Another way to increase your life expectancy is to incorporate movement into your daily routine.

Now Patient elaborated: “From taking a walk along the beach to having a dance party in your house, exercise can come in many different forms.

“By doing around an hour of physical activity a day, you can strengthen your muscles and release a whole host of happy hormones.”

The NHS recommends everybody does at least 150 minutes of exercise each week.

To aid longevity, it is also helpful to adopt a good sleeping pattern that ensures you get at least seven hours of shuteye each night.

Good sleep hygiene contributes to better mood, memory, and immunity – just ensure you wake up and go to bed at the same time every day.

Another way to help improve longevity is to “avoid stress”, especially chronic stress.

“Research indicates that chronic stress can be detrimental to your health, so much so that it can reduce your lifespan,” stated Now Patient.
